German Baroque Lute after Michael Rauche

72cm & 100cm, 13 courses; after Michael Rauche 1762 (V&A Museum No. 9/1871) 23 ribs; the original is in ivory with ebony strips between. Neck and extension ebony inlaid with elaborate marquetry of ivory panels with instruments and the maker's name and address. Possibly the only historic lute made in England to have survived. Triple rose and ornate bridge and endclasp.

The pictures below show three different versions of the decorative detail. The first is a close copy of the original but with an obvious change of name! The second uses a titlepage from music published in the same year of 1762; and the third is the undecorated version.
